First, I asked her to bring her clippers so we could trim up the tree/bush.
She did a nice quick job, and then it was time to decide what to do with the rest of the space. I was thinking some veggies in pots or trays, and then if we had enough money, a shrub or bush for the corner. And some weed spray to attack the rest.
Thankfully both Home Depot and Lowe's are relatively close, so after some price comparisons and a 10% off coupon to Lowe's from the change of address envelope you get at the post office, we ended up getting most of the things at Lowe's. We did go back to Home Depot for the veggie plants because they just looked nicer and were on sale. And we got it all within our budget!
We bought:
- seeds for lettuce and peas (to be planted in August)
- window boxes to plant them in
- tomato, pepper, and zucchini plants
- super cheap hanging planters for them (just discarded the hanging parts)
- a bag of soil for vegetables
- an azalea plant
- a bag of topsoil
- a trowel
- gardening gloves
- weed killer
We started with the three vegetable plants
Next was the azalea, so we needed to clear the rocks and dig a hole. Simple, right? Ha! If you live in MN/IA and have black dirt maybe. Not if you live in KY and your ground is solid clay. After 20 minutes of Mom and I both working on that hole we both decided a pot would be better. Hey, and that way we could take it with us if we move, right?
So that night we bought a pot and the next day planted our azalea. Happy family!
Now I just get to water the plants and wait for August when I can plant the other veggies!
