Ping Pong Birthday Party

On Saturday night we celebrated Eric's birthday at our school's ping pong hall. We played ping pong of course, had a few other relay races, sang Happy Birthday, and ate lots of cake, cupcakes, and other snacks. Eric got many interesting gifts including a jailbird cat that doubles as a money bank, and multiple mug/dish sets with matching spoons. The real favorite though was a small stuffed tiger named "Wang Lao Hu".

Rice Sack Races?

This afternoon we heard a lot of shouting and yelling down below outside our apartment. Kids fighting? Playing a game? Then we noticed a yellow line across the path. Hm...
Not long after, we saw what was really going on: a diverse group of families having potato sack races! We pondered where they could have gotten the sacks... maybe rice sacks?

Blenders

Rubber scrapers do not belong in blenders.

I should know, right? Growing up I learned by example about forks... At Jill's I tried a spoon... (she wasn't excited) Here I tried a rubber scraper... Better than metal, right?! (sigh...) Our children are destined to learn this bad habit. I just know it.

A Trip to the Countryside

During our winter break Eric went to visit a student at his home in the countryside. The trip was about 19 hours each way by train. If that's not enough, imagine the ride back without a ticketed seat. This means you stand or hopefully sit on a small portable chair or bucket in the aisle of an open carriage with people standing all over you with bags and boxes, overnight... I could go on, but maybe you should just ask Eric. Hm... Welcome to holiday travel.

The time there though was very enjoyable. He got to hang out with his friend and his family, meet the locals, learn to ride a motorcycle, watch some Olympics, try numerous plates of interesting food, and tour a large city nearby. He also had some quality conversations with people he met.

Below you'll first see him learning to ride the motorcycle with the owner watching. Next is the courtyard of his friend's house. All of the roofs slant in so the rain comes into the middle of their home from every direction which is supposed to bring luck and blessing. Then you have the colored chicks!

This last photo is a sweet shot he got at a second lunch. (Five meals that day.) A variety of food including potatoes, lotus root, peanuts, cucumber, something he told himself was noodles, gelatinous meat, and banana bread (our contribution). Note the small chairs too.

Tang Yuan

Last night some girls taught
Andrea how to make "Tang Yuan".

1. Use rice flour and water to make a compact dough
2. Roll it into little balls
3. Shape them into mushroom tops
4. Put some filling inside
5. Reshape the balls
6. Drop them into boiling water

We used a sesame filling and some food coloring.
A little glutenous, but good!
